HAPPENINGS - June 29 - July 12

Have a Safe July 4th
WE'RE NOT OPEN YET but we're counting the days now to be up and running! Come in and see our renovated shop if you haven't had a chance already. After 29+ years we have a totally updated, bright new look. We still have the great prices and upscale resale items that we had before, just in an updated environment. See you soon, promise!

Remember that cute outfit you found here for last summer? Bet you can find another one! Once we open there will be a new selection of items for the warm days ahead. Lots of time to make good use of those special discoveries. Don't forget, we also have household items and antiques/collectibles to change that décor you've been looking at the last five months, and lots of cool men's wear.

HAPPENINGS - June 15-28

Once again, no upcoming "happenings" from the Discovery Shop. We will remain closed until King County attains Phase 2 of Governor Inslee's Phased Reopening Plan. We're getting close!

Have you found that you need something to do away from the house? The Discovery Shop is always looking for volunteers in both the front and back rooms. Some people have been volunteering over twenty years, so that obviously says something about the dedication and the wonderful volunteers. It seems everyone has been touched in their lives by cancer and this is a great way to give back to "help celebrate more birthdays."

The Discovery Shop carries a variety of merchandise, from men's and women's wear to household items, antiques and collectibles, shoes and accessories like hats, gloves and scarves. New items are put on the floor daily and it's a "new look" every time you come in. We have holiday décor for every special day during the year. Give yourself a new display item to brighten the day.

Hope to see you soon !

Men's Department
Once again, no upcoming "Happenings" from the Discovery Shop. Our volunteers are
ready, willing and able to take the reins again once we get the go-ahead from the Governor and the American Cancer Society head office.

Some people have been volunteering over twenty years, so that says something about the dedication and the wonderful people you meet. Ages vary from young to late 90's. It seems everyone has been touched in their lives by cancer and this is a great way to give back and "help celebrate more birthdays."

HAPPENINGS - May 18-31

Once again, no upcoming "happenings" from the Discovery Shop. Our volunteers are ready to take over the reins again once we get the go-ahead from the Governor and the American Cancer Society head office.

Have you found during this time at home that you need something more to do? The Discovery Shop is always looking for volunteers in both the front and back. From front cashiering to the back room, volunteers are needed to accept donations, iron or steam, price items plus many other things. The shifts are four hours just once a week. Some people have been volunteering over twenty years, so that says something about the dedication and the wonderful people you meet. Ages vary from young to late 90's. It seems everyone has been touched in their lives by cancer and this is a good way to give back and "help celebrate more birthdays."

Some volunteers are patiently waiting to return to the Shop (some not so patiently!) and when asked how they are spending their free time, these are a few of their comments:

Candace L - Walking, walking, walking!

Judy K - Started knitting again after many years. If you need a dish cloth, let me know!

Lena M - Bored silly! Celebrated my 97th birthday with everyone in the condo complex standing on their decks singing Happy Birthday! I miss my Discovery Shop friends!

Michele R - Besides walking more than 20 miles per week, I've done my share of Spring cleaning too. It's amazing what you can "discover" in the corners of closets or cabinets.

Mary M - Cooking a lot, eating a lot, cleaning, organizing, purging, gardening, reading.  Getting more sleep .  Trying to walk more.  Calling friends.

Katie B - Still weeding my flower beds. Never ending job!

Some things in the Sunday paper to keep in mind while you're home:
  • There is a "right" and a "wrong" way to sweep the floor. (No correct answer available.)
  • Cupping a hot mug, breathing in fragrant tea, can calm your nerves.
  • Plant some marigolds in your garden or on your deck to attract pollinators and insects that eat pests.
  • Money doesn't actually grow on trees, but fruits and nuts do! Plant a fig, pear, pecan or hazelnut tree.
  • May is Mediterranean Diet month.
  • If you put blue or green mouthwash on your scalp you might end up with colored hair. Same thing could happen to your feet if you soak them in colored mouthwash.
  • You can buy a 5500 square foot villa in Beverly Hills for only $6.75 million.
  • RAVE TO EVERYONE WEARING A MASK!

HAPPENINGS - May 4-17

As I am sure you know, cancer patients and survivors are at greater risk for COVID-19. To keep people safe, we had to cancel our in-person fundraising events through June. This means we are facing a revenue shortfall no one could have predicted.

You have stepped up.

When we asked, you gave. When we moved from in-person to online events, you moved with us. We are all having to find new ways of doing things right now, and the easy way would be to simply disengage.

You engaged.

You gave. You live-streamed. You provided support for cancer patients. And thanks to you, we have been able to continue our essential services. Researchers are still working towards getting us closer to a world without cancer. Our 24/7 helpline for answers and support is adding video. We have been able to step up our resources for cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers so they can get answers on our website, social media, and podcast feed in real-time.

Thank you for continuing the fight against cancer with us. We are here for cancer patients because of you, and for that, we are so, so grateful.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Gary M. Reedy

HAPPENINGS - March 22, 2020

Amid the uncertainty that surrounds the nation right now, one thing that remains constant is that the American Cancer Society and the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) are focused on the health and safety of our patients, volunteers, and staff.

This is undoubtedly a challenging time, but the fact is, cancer does not stop and neither do we. I am proud to share that the American Cancer Society remains available to provide information, support, and guidance to patients and families 24 hours a day, seven days a week via our free helpline, 1-800-227-2345, and our website, cancer.org. The American Cancer Society also has a number of resources available about coronavirus and cancer, including this FAQ and this podcast featuring our team of experts. In addition, ACS CAN continues to advocate for access to critical health care at the federal, state, and local levels – an urgent need in the face of this pandemic.

We continue to monitor the coronavirus situation and implement measures to prioritize the health and safety of our patients, volunteers, and staff. For that reason, we have taken several steps to minimize the impact of the virus for those we serve. These proactive steps include:
  • Restricting or implementing temporary adjustments to some of our patient service programs to reduce the risk of infection to our patients, volunteers, and staff. Those in need of support should contact our helpline for specific guidance and assistance.
  • Suspending all in-person events for the next eight weeks. Once the situation improves, we will work with our volunteers and communities to reschedule them.
  • Temporarily closing all American Cancer Society and ACS CAN offices and Discovery Shops to the public and transitioning our staff to a virtual workforce.
For updates on the American Cancer Society and our ongoing response to the coronavirus, visit cancer.org, and connect with us on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram.

We hope you, your families, and your loved ones remain safe and in good health during this challenging time. Now more than ever, we are so grateful for the passion and dedication of our millions of volunteers and supporters. Thank you for your continued support of our mission and for all you are doing to help lead the fight for a world without cancer.
