HAPPENINGS - September 13 - 30, 2021

"A UNIQUE QUALITY RESALE EXPERIENCE"

More history of the early years: The society was founded on May 23, 1913 by 10 physicians and 5 businessmen in New York City under the name American Society for the Control of Cancer. The current name of American Cancer Society was adopted in1944. In the early years the Society first used its now-iconic Sword of Hope symbol, which today is part of the organization's logo. The sword symbol was adopted by ACS in 1928. The two serpents forming the handle represent the scientific and medical focus of the society's mission and the blade expresses the "crusading spirit of the cancer control movement."

Over the past 100 years, the logo has changed many times. The current ACS logo presents a contemporary, powerful, and cohesive entity. The trapezoidal shape with the angled edge suggests forward movement, aspiration and growth. The overall design creates the image of a flag being carried forth toward victory. This symbol is intended to unite people in the common goal to save lives from cancer.
